Before reading single placements, astrologers check the overall climate: how much fire, earth, air and water the chart holds. It’s the fastest reading — and one of the truest.
Every sign belongs to an element (its fuel) and a modality (its way of moving). Since your ten planets scatter across the signs, your chart ends up with a recipe of its own: maybe loads of fire and no water, or all the earth in the world. That recipe is your base temperament.
Lots of fire: energy, initiative, need for motion; the risk is scorching without meaning to. Little fire: starting and getting excited is hard; find what lights the engine.
Lots of earth: realism, steadiness, craft; the risk is rigidity or living only for the practical. Little earth: brilliant ideas that struggle to land; routines and deadlines help.
Lots of air: mental agility, conversation, perspective; the risk is living everything from the head. Little air: naming things and gaining distance is hard; writing helps enormously.
Lots of water: deep sensitivity, an emotional radar; the risk is flooding — yours and everyone else’s. Little water: registering what you feel is hard; the body usually warns before the heart.
They launch things: projects, relationships, chapters. Their challenge is sustaining what they start.
They bring stability, loyalty and endurance. Their challenge is letting go and changing course in time.
Flexible, versatile, translators between worlds. Their challenge is not to scatter or dissolve.
Take your chart and count the element of each of these eight points: Sun, Moon, Rising, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn (the first three count double if you want precision; Uranus, Neptune and Pluto don’t count — they’re generational). Do the same with the modalities.
The element with the most points is your default climate: your natural way of answering life. The one at zero (if any) is your pending function — you’re not missing it, it just costs you, and you tend to seek it outside: partners, friends or jobs that carry it built-in. Knowing this is gold for understanding what attracts you and what drains you.
